Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
This collection focuses on certificates issued by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
The B&O received its charter in 1827 and the railroad continued under the same name until it was acquired by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1963. (The C&O later become the Chessie System).
During its 136 year history, the B&O went to the capital markets many times for financing. Certificates resulting from those transactions are shown here.
This collection focuses on certificates with vignettes of steam locomotives. The vignettes trace the evolution of the steam locomotive from units having 1 or 2 horsepower to units having several thousand horsepower. The period covered is 1830 when the steam locomotive made its debut through 1950 when the steam locomotive met its demise in favor of the diesel-electric locomotive.
